As part of its feasibility study, Sports Facilities Advisory, LLC, sent surveys to local stakeholders and is scheduling interviews to determine if Hancock County could support a multi-sport indoor recreation complex.
“They are in the information gathering phase of their research – this step is early in the process, part of market and participation analysis,” said Chris Keller, director of strategic initiatives for Findlay Hancock County Economic Development. “The firm will interview local athletic directors, coaches, those who run other sports facilities, city and county officials, and other stakeholders to gauge not only the need for a facility, but their interest in it.”
FHCED, in partnership with the Findlay Hancock County Convention & Visitors Bureau, contracted with the firm in June to conduct the study. The sports complex vision would entail working with local partners to run the facility and host sports tournaments, and serve as a resource for local sports teams to practice and compete. Such a facility could substantially boost the local economy, drawing out-of-town visitors who would seek lodging, dining, retail, entertainment, and transportation opportunities through sports tourism.
The interviews will glean information such as what sports are prevalent in Hancock County, where teams are practicing now, the rates they pay and if current facilities suit their needs. It will also address what potential challenges stakeholders see and others they recommend the firm talk to.
“There has been interest in bringing a facility like this to the community for years, and while we have encountered obstacles, we are still looking at the potential,” said Dan Sheaffer, director of FHCED. “Through this study, our community will be able to make informed decisions as we work toward recreational and economic evolution that grows with us.”
To make its recommendations, the firm will review existing data previously collected, and conduct market analysis including demographics, socioeconomic factors, sports participation in the region, and an analysis of existing service providers. The process includes financial and strategic planning guidance, assistance in forming alliances with stakeholders, and a 5-year cash flow analysis and 20-year financial outlook.
