Findlay-Hancock County Economic Development Welcomes Students from Kawaguchi, Japan
By Sarah Mayle
Along with leaders from the University of Findlay and local officials, Findlay-Hancock County Economic Development has helped to cultivate and maintain a flourishing relationship with Friendship City Kawaguchi since 2018. Earlier this month, students and two administrators from Kawaguchi visited Findlay for nine days as part of an annual Kawaguchi Friendship Camp, during which practicing English is emphasized.
At a farewell ceremony concluding their trip, it was clear the students had experienced something special. Each took a turn at the microphone and spoke about their experiences – the places they visited and friendly people they met. The students heartfully thanked their Findlay host families. Several were tearful as they recounted how difficult it was to speak English; they were grateful their host families were so patient and kind, that they listened, and made them feel welcome in their homes. The students were not ready to leave.
During their stay, the students went bowling, toured model houses, visited the Toledo Zoo and rode ziplines, enjoyed a cookout, solved a Findlay scavenger hunt, visited with residents at Birchaven Retirement Community, kayaked the Blanchard River, led a craft and presented at the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library, spoke at Afternoon Rotary Club, visited the mayor’s office and city council chambers; and at Riverside Park, planted a cherry tree and plaque in remembrance of their visit.
The camp and activities were organized by Dr. Hiro Kawamura, UF professor of Japanese and a partner to the FHCED office. The students were impressive at the welcome ceremony – each speaking in English about themselves and demonstrating a skill. It was a privilege to then be a part of their farewell one week later – to realize they had the experience of a lifetime, made friends to last a lifetime, and sharpened their English-speaking skills while they were at it.
Findlay leaders in business, government and education have made it a priority for more than 40 years to build and maintain an exceptional friendship with Japan, with exchange programs and delegations connecting regularly. We are proud to be a part of this valuable cultural exchange!
